🛂 Entry Requirements

Do I Need a Visa?

  • Citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives do not need a visa to enter Bhutan. Indian nationals may also use their Voter ID card instead of a passport.

  • Travelers from all other countries must obtain a visa before arrival. Your tour operator will handle the entire visa application process on your behalf.

Visa Fee: USD 40 per person (non-refundable)

Processing Time: Usually 5–7 working days. We recommend applying at least 2–3 weeks before your planned travel date.

  • A clear digital copy of your passport’s bio page

  • A recent passport-size photograph

  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended for your safety and peace of mind)

Important Note: Independent travel is not permitted in Bhutan. All visitors must travel with a licensed guide and use private transport arranged by a registered tour operator.

💵 Daily Fee & Government Levy

Bhutan follows a “High Value, Low Impact” tourism policy. A daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is charged to all visitors. This fee helps fund Bhutan’s free healthcare, education, and environmental conservation efforts.

Children (Under 6) Free
Indian Nationals INR 1,200

🌿 When to Visit

Bhutan is beautiful throughout the year. Each season offers a unique experience.

Season Months What to Expect
Spring March – May Pleasant weather, colorful rhododendron blooms, lively festivals
Summer June – August Lush green landscapes, occasional rain, quieter trails
Autumn September – November Clear skies, crisp air, stunning mountain views, major festivals
Winter December – February Cold but sunny days, fewer tourists, chance to see black-necked cranes in Phobjikha Valley

For most travelers, spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather and the richest cultural experiences.

🧳 What to Pack

Bhutan’s weather can change quickly, especially with altitude. Dressing in layers is the smartest way to stay comfortable.

Clothing Suggestions:

  • Light inner layers, warm sweaters or fleece, and a windproof jacket

  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirts for visiting temples and monasteries

  • Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots (essential for the Tiger’s Nest hike)

  • A hat, cap, and sunglasses for sun protection at higher altitudes

Other Useful Items:

  • Reusable water bottle (stay hydrated and help reduce plastic waste)

  • Sunscreen and lip balm (the mountain sun is surprisingly strong)

  • Moisturizer (the air can be quite dry)

  • A small daypack for shorter excursions

  • Motion sickness tablets (the mountain roads are winding)

  • A basic first-aid kit and insect repellent

🏥 Health & Safety Tips

Before You Go:

  • Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid.

  • If you are traveling from a country with Yellow Fever risk, you will need a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.

During Your Stay:

  • Altitude: Thimphu is at 2,320 meters, and some places are even higher. Take it easy on your first day to allow your body to adjust.

  • Healthcare: Thimphu has a good hospital, but other areas have only basic medical facilities. Make sure your travel insurance covers emergency evacuation.

  • Emergency Contact: Dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire services.

🙏 Local Customs & Etiquette

Bhutanese people are warm and welcoming, but they deeply respect their traditions. A little awareness goes a long way.

  • Dress Modestly: When entering monasteries and Dzongs, cover your shoulders and knees. A scarf or shawl is useful for this.

  • Photography: Always ask before taking photos of people, monks, or religious sites. Photography is not allowed inside temple halls.

  • Smoking: Bhutan has strict anti-smoking laws. Smoking is banned in public places, and tobacco imports are heavily restricted.

  • Currency: The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is pegged to the Indian Rupee. Major foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks and hotels. Credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, but cash is useful in smaller shops and villages.

  • Evening Atmosphere: Bhutan is a peaceful country with a quiet evening culture. Most towns wind down early, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the serenity.

  • Antiques and Artifacts: Exporting religious items, antiques over 100 years old, or culturally significant objects is strictly prohibited without special permission.
